Practical Guide to help determine what Martial Art is for you

What is the difference between some of the Martial Arts?

Karate - Designed by Gichin Funakoshi, Karate is a striking, Kicking, blocking system that encompasses focus on footwork, speed, power, stance, movement and timing. Karate is performed on your feet with very little "take down" movement except for an occasional foot sweep. Kata (Forms) are preset movements designed in the Karate system that teaches the Karateka (Karate student) the above mentioned elements. Karate is quite competitive and in Sport Karate, you will see competitors adorn fighting gear during their fighting competitions. Karate is great for the competitive or non-competitive Karateka. You may obtain rank through years of dedication.

Judo - Designed by Professor Jigoro Kano, Judo is a Japanese Grappling art. Judo encompasses clean "stand up" throwing techniques called "Tachi Waza" using leverage and Grappling Techniques called "Newaza" or "Katame Waza". Usually a Judoka (Judo Student) will practice many forms of hold down techniques coupled with chokes and arm-bars. Judo is a very competitive sport and it's unified world wide. It is also an Olympic Sport, where youth can aspire to be an Olympian. There are three US Judo governing bodies currently recording each Judoka's status. Judo is an excellent form of training for wrestlers in their off-season. Judo is great for women as well, because it uses the opponent’s strength against them. You will not find much striking at all in Judo. Judo is also an important part of Japan's Physical Education System. You may obtain rank though years of dedication and/or competition.

Jujitsu, Jujutsu, Jiu-Jitsu - All spellings of Jujitsu means the same and are inter-changeable. Jujitsu is one of the oldest forms of Martial Arts dating back centuries. The ancient Samurai practiced the arts of Jujutsu and Kobudo (weapon training) learning the ways of Budo (Martial Way). Using hand to hand combat when necessary, you will see the elements of Hand and foot techniques of Karate and the leverage take down techniques, joint locking techniques, chokes and ground work of Judo. Jujitsu is the Grandfather of Judo and is widely practiced today. There are thousands of systems of Jujitsu, but the oldest came from Aiki-jutsu. Jujitsu is usually a non-competitive program, but with the popularity of today UFC and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Jujitsu takes on a whole new image. Jujitsu is a very versatile art in many ways. Anyone and everyone can receive what they need in the Martial Arts through Jujitsu. You may obtain ranks through years of dedication.

Self Defense - Is the most mainstream of all. It is NOT a Martial Art, because a student does not have to train many years to obtain the knowledge they seek in Self Defense. Usually, Self Defense is given in weekly courses. Self Defense is less time consuming. No ranks are given, however quick, useful tools to use if an "in case of an emergency" situation arises. Self Defense is a great way to determine if a student would want to go into a longer term of study. Otherwise, it's a great way to get the instant knowledge needed to get out of a jam. Self Defense a great course for anyone however it is a better course for Women in general.
